Internal cosmetic or non-structural kitchen renovations do not require local council permits.
If your kitchen renovation is part of a larger structural extension or requires altering load-bearing walls or windows you must apply for a building permit via the Banyule City Council.
You will require a permit for a bathroom renovation if you are making structural changes such as removing or altering load-bearing walls, cutting into floor joists, or changing the building’s footprint.
You will also need a building permit if you are relocating plumbing and drainage. That is, relocating toilets, showers, or drains, or installing new wet areas.
You do not require a permit if you are making cosmetic changes with no plumbing relocation in your bathroom.
